Hybrid Pickup Classic: The 2007 GMC Sierra 1500
Hybrid pickups have recently been entering the scene alongside the sedans and SUVs. Since consumers are getting more conscious about gas mileage and fuel economy, vehicle manufacturers have also been busy creating the perfect truck that can perform up to par with the conventional gasoline-powered ones. Here is a review on one great truck.
Overview
The Sierra Hybrid has a hefty price tag ranging from $26,000 up to $32,000 depending on the specifications and accessories. According to EPA, the hybrid pickup has a fuel economy of 17 to 18 mpg in city traffic and 19 to 21 on the highway. The vehicle is powered by a 295-horsepower 5.3-liter V-8 engine with 4-speed automatic with OD transmission. Other engine variations are also available with corresponding differences in horsepower and gas mileage benefits.
The Outside
The Sierra 1500 Hybrid Classic has a modern feel to it compared to the conventional one. The hood and fender shapes are new but reminiscent to that of the Silverado. The headlights are vertically arranged and flat while a tall bumper is located just underneath.
The grille is mostly dark with chrome trimmings. The windshield lies on a lower angle with a squarer and taller nose. The wheels measure 18 inches. Overall, the exterior styling improved the pickup’s aerodynamics. Optional add-ons can be done such as a full chrome grille and 20-inch wheels.
The Inside
The interior of the Sierra Hybrid has improved a lot in terms of quality and space. The truck has a double glove compartment and huge storage areas in the middle. The dashboard is even wider with big controls and handles for better driving. The seats are wide enough with a smaller seat in between that can easily be converted into an armrest. Windshield washers, CD player and leather upholstery are also available.
Specifications
The 5.3-liter V-8 engine has cylinder-deactivation technology which can run on E85 ethanol, gasoline or a combination of both. The transmission has a sequential manual mode allowing drivers to shift anytime through column shifter switch. With the power conservation mechanism, the Sierra is able to tow around 10,500 pounds.
Suspension options called NHT are also available through the powerful engine for maximum towing capacity and performance. According to General Motors, the Sierra 1500 Hybrid has been successful in many aspects such as gas mileage advantage, better maneuverability and style. Creators have worked hard to differentiate it from its sister vehicle, the Chevy Silverado.
Add-ons
There are various engine choices available for the Sierra 1500 Hybrid. A V-6 engine with 4.3 liters and 195 horsepower is the least consumers can get. As for V-8s, a 4.8-liter can generate 285 horsepower, the 5.3-liter generates 295 horsepower and the aluminum 5.3-liter generates 310 horsepower. There is another 5.3-liter V-8 engine which runs on 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline.
Other add-ons to this hybrid pickup include camper and uplevel mirrors, grille modifications, roof rails, navigation and communication systems and sound system. The daytime running lights as well as the antilock brakes are present in all models.
