Hybrid Chrysler SUVs Are Entering The Scene

Chrysler Hybrid Adjustments

At present, Chrysler is planning to join the hybrid bandwagon by developing the Chrysler hybrid Aspen and Dodge Durango hybrid. The two models use the HEMI engines unique to Chrysler.

In the near future, the company will also be working with General Motors and BMW to produce more hybrid vehicles at the same time developing a Hybrid Diesel truck to help military operations as it did in the past several years. The new ENVI division has been created in 2007 by Chrysler to specifically design and make hybrid vehicles.

Chrysler Aspen Hybrid

The Chrysler Aspen Hybrid is bound to be introduced early in 2008. The car features a 5.7-liter 340 horsepower HEMI engine with MDS. It also uses the new Two-Mode Hybrid system which is a product of Chrysler’s collaborative actions with General Motors and BMW. Highway fuel economy is estimated to improve by as much as 25% while city fuel economy will improve by 40%.

Dodge Durango Hybrid

The Dodge Durango Hybrid will also be introduced early in 2008. Similar to the Aspen, the new vehicle features a 5.7-liter 340 horsepower HEMI V-8 engine with MDS as well as the Two-Mode Hybrid system with GM and BMW. The improvements in fuel economy in highway and city driving are also 25% and 40% respectively. The Durango’s fuel mileage is estimated to be around 18.2 mpg in the city and 22.5 mpg on the highway. Compared to its conventional gasoline-powered counterpart, the Hybrid version has improved by 5 mpg overall.

The Two-Mode Hybrid System

The new and improved two-mode hybrid system of Chrysler is different compared to other manufacturers which only use single-mode systems. The first mode is the Input-split Mode wherein the vehicle automatically switches to electric generator, combustion engine or both when slowing down.

The first motor functions to conserve energy as the second operates. The second mode is the Compound-split mode wherein more advanced technologies for fuel efficiency are used. Clutches and gears simultaneously operate as the electric motor allows transmission to function as CVT.  The second mode is typically used when running at high speeds or carrying heavy loads.

The HEMI engine got its name from the hemispherical shape of the cylinder head’s combustion chamber. The HEMI engine is also referred to as the crossflow cylinder head. Although the engine mechanism and concept is widely used by other car manufacturer’s the name remains as a trademark of Chrysler Corporation.
